My name is Sarah Ruth Joanou (pronounced Joe-AWN-oh) and I am a Chicago based artist, writer, actor, and freelance film crew Jay-of-all-trades, specializing in production design, set dressing, props collecting, and costumes.
While I come from a traditional theatre background, I also have extensive experience in the service industry. My ten plus years serving/bartending have afforded me with a unique and highly productive skill set: extreme attention to detail and multi-tasking, continuity, cost-effective problem solving, cross-functional communication, an eye and appreciation for beauty, resourcefulness, ingenuity, and more.
I spent my four years of theatre school working in both the set and costume shops, helping build and paint the sets for many of our productions. I also budgeted, shopped for, and sewed costumes, all coordinating with the production designers to adhere to the overall art direction of each show. I have performed the functions of: production designer, set dresser/stylist, props collector, MUA, wardrobe/costume designer, actor, writer, director, & producer.
I've been on a number of film & theatre sets in my 5+ years in Chicago, and am always eager to learn more about each department. I have a valid driver's license and own my own vehicle (a reliable Chevrolet HHR with ample trunk space), I am fluent in Microsoft Word, Excel, and am familiar with Adobe Illustrator. I pride myself on being a fast learner, extremely resourceful, and the kind of person who thrives on the constructive chaos of the unpredictable set life. Twelve hour days are not new to me, and I'm good at keeping up morale. I think ten steps ahead of what the team needs, and have contingency plans for everything. I own several adorable and highly functional fanny packs, and I will always have a spare phone charger and piece of gum on me. I have no bad set habits, only an eagerness to learn more about the craft and invest in my future in the industry.
